Ling-Wen Tsai / 蔡姈妏: Resonant Voids

As a part of Ling-Wen Tsai’s solo exhibition, Quiet Voids, she has written a conceptual score entitled Resonant Voids. The work is a structured improvisation in five movements. The score will be Interpreted and performed by Carl Dimow (Shakuhachi, Concert flute and Bass-Flute) & Nathan Kolosko (Tarhu, Oud, Kamancheh and Tar) on Saturday March 26th, 3-4pm in the gallery

Ling-Wen Tsai’s practice spans a broad range of media, and her work has taken the form of installation, performance, video, photography, painting, drawing, and combinations of these media. Ling-Wen also has often collaborated with musicians and composers, including Nathan Kolosko (multi-instrumentalist/composer), Carl Dimow (flutist/composer), ISQ: Improvisational String Quartet (musicians), and Lior Navok (composer.) These collaborative efforts have manifested themselves in many of her works and exhibitions. 

About Nathan Kolosko 

Multi-instrumentalist Nathan Kolosko performs and composes music that encompases a broad range of repertoire and genres; music which embraces ancient traditions as well as contemporary approaches and sensibilities. His compositions have been performed and recorded by numerous musicians, and his works are currently published by Productions D'Oz. Collaboration is a source of inspiration for Nathan. His collaborators have included musicians Carl Dimow, Dan Cosley, and the Middle Eastern ensemble Zapion. Nathan has also had an ongoing collaborative relationship with visual/performance artist Ling-Wen Tsai. In 2021, Nathan and multi-instrumentalist Eric LaPerna formed the Seyir Duo. The duo performs modal music of the near and Middle East. Nathan has an M.A. in classical guitar performance from the University of Denver where he studied with Ricardo Iznaola. Nathan has been the recipient of numerous grants and awards, including grants from the Allied Arts Foundation, D'Addario Strings, and Maine Arts Commission. Nathan has an active career as an educator and has over twenty-five years of experience as a guitar instructor/professor.

 

About Carl Dimow

Flutist and guitarist Carl Dimow is an eclectic musician whose performances include jazz, klezmer, Brazilian choro, and a wide variety of improvised music.  Current projects include the Carl Dimow Jazz Quartet, the Casco Bay Tummlers klezmer band, Choro Louco and various special projects such as this one.  As a composer, Carl has created original music for his various ensembles, plus music for theater and film.  His Klezmer Suite for Flute and Classical Guitar won the National Flute Association New Music Competition in 2014 and has been performed on five continents.
