Garry Mitchell
Garry Mitchell has always been fascinated by maps. Through various elements of design, from typography to color theory to data visualization, they beautifully capture complex notions about space, scale, typography, politics, and much more. For Mitchell, it's interesting to use maps to explore the elusive intersection of the traditional and the experimental. Maps as a medium become a conceptual tool for abstract representation.
A graduate of University of Hawaii and Pratt Institute, Garry Mitchell has exhibited his work nationally and internationally. He has received fellowships from Yaddo, The MacDowell Colony, the Edward Albee Foundation, and the Provincetown Fine Arts Workcenter, among other places, and grants from the Ford Foundation, the Massachusetts Arts Council, the Arizona Arts Commission, and the Maryland Commission on the Arts.
